As part of his 9 county tour, SUNY Albany President Robert Jones and a group of about 40 faculty, students and local business representatives made a stop at the Port of Albany today. The visit included a tour of the Port facilities followed by a lunch outside overlooking the BBC Oregon docked to receive GE turbines from Schenectady County destined for Egypt. Rich Hendrick, Port General Manager guided a trolley tour of the Port facilities – with the following highlights: the maritime operations; the BBC Oregon; the recently completed $12.5 million Albany wharf reconstruction; the currently underway $11.5 million Rensselaer wharf reconstruction project that was funded through the Governor’s Regional Councils (of which Robert Jones is now a co-chair); the Cargill grain operations; and the Upstate Shredding development site where the company will invest $15 million and create 40 new jobs to start its first shipping center.
The tour was a chance to showcase the Port’s economic impact in the region, state and its global connections around the world. The last economic impact study of the Port of Albany showed the tenants of the APDC generates approximately 1,400 local jobs and 4,500 jobs throughout New York State and the Port’s overall economic impact on New York State was measured at more than $813 million. The measure of the Port’s significance to the Regional economy in terms of output was more than $428 million. During President’s Jones’ remarks he noted that Cargill, a tenant of the Port since its designation in early 1930’s has a major operations in Minnesota where he recently moved from, showing the interconnections.
The Port was the last stop of the President’s Albany County tour which include Albany High School, the Albany Waterfront and Corning Preserve and the Palace Theatre. The President and group arrived at the Port at approximately 12:15 and departed close to 2pm. The President was also joined during the tour by Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings, Albany County Executive Dan McCoy and the Port of Albany Commissioners.
